The 18-year-old defender, who is spending the season on loan with Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday, was handed his first senior appearance for United by Amorim during a Premier League match away at Leicester City in March. ..Continue Reading
Since moving to Hillsborough, the London-born full-back has impressed under manager Henrik Pedersen and quickly established himself as a regular.
Wednesday are reportedly pleased with his development and are keen to retain him, despite attracting attention from elsewhere.
Amass has made 16 appearances for the Yorkshire side this season, contributing one goal and one assist.
However, despite his apparent progress, he became the subject of a surprising comment from Amorim during a press conference ahead of United’s clash with Bournemouth.
Following discussion around Kobbie Mainoo, Chido Obi and Toby Collyer, Amorim was questioned about why Mainoo has not been sent out on loan despite limited game time. He responded: “In the end, it’s going to be the training, the games.
“Of course. He’s not playing so many games, but Kobbie has had opportunities, especially last year. Everyone has.
“Amass is now struggling in the Championship. Chido is not always a starter in the under-21s.
“All these guys played when a lot of people were saying: ‘Sack the manager’. So, you can see that I’m not worried.”
Supporters were quick to challenge Amorim’s assessment online, pointing out that Amass had recently been named Sheffield Wednesday’s Player of the Month for November, contradicting claims that he is “struggling”.
Only hours later, Amass appeared to respond by sharing an Instagram story showing himself holding the award, alongside a smiling emoji.
Fans once again took to social media to weigh in.
One supporter wrote: “It’s okay to “struggle”, and hopefully a bit of criticism from Amorim pushes Amass to produce more rather than crumble from any sort of ego or pressure.”
Another commented: “Amorim messed up, a manager of his standard shouldn’t have said that about a young player like that. Why would you say he is struggling?”
A third added: “This right here is everything wrong with the United academy.
“What exactly is the point in making this post?”
The Instagram story has since been deleted. Obi also shared — and later removed — a post celebrating a goal.
The Danish forward has additionally removed Manchester United from his social media bio.
